On May 25, 2007, Google released Street View, a new feature of Google Maps which provides 360? panoramic street-level views of various U.S. cities. On this date, the feature only included five cities, but has since expanded to twenty-three, with plans for more U.S. and Canadian cities in the future. Some cities, like San Francisco, are in high resolution, while other cities are limited in resolution.

Google Street View has also gained a significant amount of controversy in the days following its release; privacy concerns have erupted due to the uncensored nature of its panoramic photographs.

In certain locations, you can view and navigate within street-level imagery. To do this:

  1. Navigate to a location. If street views are available, the Street View button appears.
  2. Click Street View. Roads with available street views appear with a blue border.
  3. If you are zoomed far out, a camera icon appears at locations with available street views. Zoom until you can see individual streets on the map.
  4. A human icon appears on the map. Click this icon to view a street view for this location or click any street with a blue border. An info window appears with street level imagery. The green arrow points in the direction you’re looking
  5. To rotate the view, do any of the following:
    • Drag the imagery right or left. In some locations, you can drag the imagery up to look skyward.
    • Click the pivot arrows [<---] , [-->]
  6. To zoom in or out, do one of the following:
    • Drag the slider
    • Click + or -
    • Double click the point on the image to zoom in. Once you have done this, click Zoom Out to return to the original view.
  7. To navigate along a street, click one of the white arrows overlaid on the street to move in that direction. You can also use arrow keys. Street names display within the info window. You can navigate on to another street once you reach the center of an intersection.
  8. To expand the info window and view a larger street view, click Full-screen. To shink an expanded info window, click [-]. To close a window, click [x].
