Like many other map services, Google Maps can generate driving directions between any pair of locations in the United States and Canada, as well as many other countries. It shows turn-by-turn instructions, an estimate of the trip time, and the distance between the two locations. Since July 2007, a user can drag any point on the route to another location to add a waypoint, and instantly see the revised route and length while dragging.

Depending on your location, you can get directions from one location to another. To do this, do one of the following:

  • In the search field, enter a from-to statement (example: from New York to San Francisco) and click Search Maps.
  • Click Get directions, enter a starting and ending location and click Search Maps.
  • Get directions from info windows
  • Right-click on the map to get directions to that location

Directions appear on the maps as a blue line. Google Maps breaks down directions into numbered sections in the left panel, along with an estimated drive time. You can click on any section number to display a info window with map detail. You can collapse or expand this view by clicking - or +.

To re-create a set of directions that do not use major highways, check Avoid highways at the top of the left panel. To reverse directions, click the appropriate link at the top of the left panel. To change the starting or ending locations of the directions, click Edit beside the location. To change the distance units for these directions, click km (kilometers) or miles.

Getting Directions Using Search Results
You can also create directions to and from markers and search results. To do this:

  1. Search Google Maps.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click a marker in the map.
    • Click a search result in the left panel
  3. In the info window, click To here or From here.
  4. Add a destination and click Go.

Getting Public Transit Directions New!
(This feature is available if Google has public transit information for the area displayed.)

You can find public transportation routes as part of your directions. To do this:

  1. Get directions.
  2. Click Take Public Transit (top of the left panel). Google Maps suggests up to four trips for you to take, which may contain different modes of transportation. For example, one trip may include a train while another includes a bus. Click a trip to see the route displayed on the map.
  3. To customize your search:
    • Click Options.
    • Enter your date and departure or arrival time.
    • Click Update.

Adding Destinations to Directions
You can add multiple destinations to your directions. For example, you can create directions that stop at three or more locations. To do this:

  1. Create directions for the first two destinations of your trip.
  2. At the bottom of the left panel, click Add Destination and enter an address. Or right-click on the map and choose Add destination to add that location to your directions.
  3. Repeat Step 2 to add another destination.

Removing or Editing Destinations
You can remove a destination from your directions. There are two ways to do this:

  • Click [X] beside the destination in the left panel.
  • Right-click on the destination marker [A] on the map and click Remove destination.

You can edit an existing destination in two ways:

  • Click Edit beside the destination and re-enter a new address.
  • Click and drag the destination marker [A] to a new location on the map.

Customizing Your Directions
Once you have created your directions, you can customize your exact route. You can:

  • Avoid or include certain road or locations in your directions
  • Compare the route, distance and mileage of different routes
  • Route around bad traffic

You can customize your directions by adding a destination or dragging the directions. Each time you drag your directions, you add a destination as part of the route.

To drag your directions:

  1. Create a set of directions.
  2. Click and drag any point on the purple directions line to any location of the map. Google Maps immediately re-creates the directions on both the map and left panel. The point you added appears as a white dot on the route. Note that Google Maps also updates the estimated travel time and distance.
  3. To add additional destinations by repeating Step 2.
  4. Move a destination, drag a marker to another location on the map.
