So with that said most people right off the back get the notion that with Guild Wars their buying into a quality title. While technically not an MMO like WoW, Guild Wars is as close to Diablo Online as were gonna get for a while (hint hint Blizzard). It’s fun, looks beautiful and has a good deal of MMO flavor to the game. It’s MMO roots stem in it’s cities, towns and castles that act as hubs to form parties and go on quests.

Along with party grouping these hubs serve as a place to rest, craft and sell new gear; along with stocking up on items. One of GW most novel ideas is the fact that it has a level 20 cap but skills and attributes that continue to evolve far past the level cap. Each class has a pool of around 300 skills that can be gained doing quests and the like throughout the world of Ascalon. With each new expansions adding hundreds more skills, quests, areas and weapons.

Travel can be handled the old fashion way by trekking along, or easily accessed via warping on the world map to locations you’ve previously been to. This cuts down on travel time immensely, also nifty is if you die in combat there is usually a resurrection gate near by; with your only repercussion being temporarily hit with a small percentage on your stats that will quickly be restored after fighting for around 15 mins. It’s a penalty but not a permanent hit.

WoW on the other hand is immense in size and scope. While the world of Guild Wars and it’s new expansion Nightfall are huge, the world of Warcraft is just plain bigger. But it’s travel is a pain in the ass. Having to sometimes walk 20 minutes to get somewhere really does slow things down and puts a hampering on the fun. Another annoyance is the fact that getting to a decent level to do anything besides kill a boar is a grind-fest that quickly slides into coma inducing boredom. Visually the World of Warcraft is a treat, using a cartoony and bright pallet it’s a treat to the eyes. But make no mistake, Guild Wars offers plenty on the visual side as well. It just takes a very different artistic approach. Warcraft is the 800lb gorilla of MMO’s currently and with good reason. With a constant living world, WoW is basically another place to live and adventure in while Guild Wars and it’s expansions offer a place to quest and play, more than a virtual world to call home and setup residence.

 World of Warcraft pluses

  • beautiful world with little loading time, but very cartoony look
  • nice selection of races
  • tons of people to play with everywhere
  • great armor and gear drops
  • mounts
  • 40 plus raid parties
  • Millions of potential gamers to quest with

World of Warcraft Cons

  • long travel times
  • 14 bucks a month to play (OUCH)
  • not many classes to choose from
  • too many fetching quests
  • have to wait for some quests to re-spawn
  • waiting lines to get on servers at night which can sometimes be a two hour wait.
  • can’t play with friends on a different server
  • PVP is decent at best
  • playing alone is the pits
  • patches that can take upwards to 3 hours to download. If you don’t patch the game, you can’t play

Guild Wars Pluses

  • Beautiful graphics as well, with a different mature look
  • No wait times to get online
  • a huge variety of quests all instanced for you and your party
  • patches and updates that stream while you play
  • custom cut-scenes for you that actually put you into the role of hero in the game
  • can warp to places you’ve been
  • story is a bigger part of the game
  • dual classes available and more classes to choose from
  • excellent PVP
  • Nice selection of Guild Houses to buy
  • can play with all of your friend regardless of server
  • no monthly fees
  • customizable Hero classes which can help you if you want to solo play
  • millions to play with as well

Guild Wars Cons

  • armor crafting can be a pain
  • not enough races to choose from
  • unique item drops can be too random at times
  • social aspects are kept to cities, castles and other hubs, but for the most part are friendly places
  • 8 party limit
  • You have to complete all quests/missions/etc in one sitting, since everything is instanced. If you have to log out, you have to start over
